The Subconscious Controls our Physical Actions We may consciously decide to put on our shoes, but our subconscious ties the shoelaces – assuming it knows how to. When you first are learning a skill, you really have to think about it. Do you remember how difficult that was for a while when you were very young? That was when you were doing it consciously and thinking a lot about how to do it. You may remember the same problem learning to ride a bike. But once you have really learned how to do physical skill, like a cartwheel, you do it without thinking, by habit. So first your conscious mind works on a skill and then when you learn it, your subconscious takes over and you do it without thinking. The Conscious Mind There is your conscious mind, the part of your mind you think with the part you are familiar with, the part you are aware of. You Have a One-track Mind – Your Conscious Mind Your conscious mind is wherever you happen to be focused on at the current moment in time and can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Your Conscious Mind Basically Does Five Things First, your conscious mind analyzes. What is that? That is the part of us that looks at problems, studies them and tries to create solutions to those problems. It is that part of us that makes decisions all day every day: “Do I want to open the door?”, “Should I have something to eat?”, “What shall I worry about?”. The second thing our conscious mind does is to rationalize. This is the part of us that always has to understand why – why things happen and why did I just do that. Unfortunately this process gives problems more power than it does to positive things and solutions. The third thing our conscious mind does is exert will power, the determination to do or not do something. But how many times have we tried to use our will power alone to make changes and found that our will power weakens or that the change is temporary? Will power can overcome immediate problems for a short time, but cannot solve problems over a long period of time. The final thing our conscious mind does is manage our short-term memory, remembering the things that you need to remember to function on a day-to-day basis, so that when your cell phone rings you know to answer it rather than stare at it or making sure that you cross the road without someone running you over. Put it all together and our conscious mind is logical, rational, analytical and focused on the short-term. Unfortunately, our conscious mind often over analyzes things and sometimes ends up with the wrong answer. Remember how teachers sometimes tell you that your first answer to an exam question will usually be right. Also, our conscious mind cannot solve deeper, long-term problems, like fear of tumbling, using will-power alone or from pressure exerted from the outside by parents or coaches. The last part of the conscious mind is the negative part. Although the mind is extremely powerful, it is also lazy. It doesn't like to do the work that is required to accept positive suggestions that it would then have to do the work to make us change. It likes to keep things the way they are. It takes too much work to make change in a positive way. And positive suggestions are one of the most difficult things to get into our subconscious minds. On the other hand, negative suggestions go into the inner mind like a hot knife through butter, because it doesn't take any work to accept a negative suggestion and do nothing. This guardian of the conscious mind that all suggestions must go through, before making it into the subconscious, we call the Critical Factor. It is the filter that usually keeps out positive suggestions to the mind and lets in the critical, negative ideas. Once a suggestion, positive or negative, passes the critical factor and goes into the subconscious, it must and will happen. Sadly, once you already believe something, like you are afraid to tumble, the Critical Factor only lets through suggestions and ideas that agree with that belief. Even if there is new evidence that is real and true, the critical Factor will filter it out and not let it in to reprogram your subconscious without hypnosis. Your Deeper Inner Self: The Subconscious Mind There is another part of your mind that is way more powerful but is hidden from your conscious mind and that works without you being aware of it. For example, it is responsible for the fact that your heart is beating now without you thinking of it and your inner subconscious mind makes sure your heart beats all day and all night even when your conscious mind is asleep and you are not aware of anything. Your subconscious mind is managing a tremendous range of so many things without you having to consciously think about any of them. Fro example, you are not sitting around thinking “I really must remember to breathe”. To understand how the subconscious mind works, it is helpful to understand that is operates just like a computer. Throughout your entire lifetime it has been programmed and programmed itself with every skill you have ever learned, all your thoughts and experiences, relationships, interpretations of the world, influences and beliefs. All this has resulted in your mental computer – your brain - living out each day as a direct result of the influences of that inner programming of which you and your conscious mind are not even aware. A computer must operate on the programming placed in it. It has no choice. The REAL person lives in the Subconscious Mind. The subconscious mind is awesomely powerful. It can make you into anything you would like to be or can make you into something you don't want to be if that was the way it was programmed. Your subconscious mind has within it all your long-term memory. Your subconscious mind holds the memories of everything you have experienced in life since the moment you were born including everything you have seen, heard, thought, felt and even smelled. Your subconscious mind guides all of your emotions, your feelings, your behaviors, your moods, your fears and anxieties, your physical performance and your responses to everything around you. Your subconscious mind is tremendously powerful and automates as much behavior as it possibly can, so that we do not have to consciously think about it. We are amazing learning machines and we learn behaviors and habits consciously and then our subconscious mind automates them and does them on autopilot so that we do not have to think about doing them. Your subconscious mind is where you get your gut feelings, your instincts and intuition that communicate with you sporadically from time to time. Like when someone is saying all the right words to you, but you get a different feeling about them. Probably the most important job of the subconscious mind is it is our protective mind. It must protect us against danger, either real or imagined. You see, something imagined by the subconscious mind is just as real to it as if it was actually happening. The subconscious mind can't tell the difference. And it must protect us from real danger or danger it just imagines. Which Part of Your Mind is More Powerful – the Conscious or the Subconscious? While your conscious mind is focused on a single thing, your subconscious mind is aware of and recording everything it can hear, see, smell, taste or feel – all at the same time. A simple example - each of our eyes has about 6 million direct connections to the brain. About 40 of them are connected to the conscious mind, covering what were are currently focusing on. The remaining 5,990,960 are connected to the subconscious mind, covering everything you can see including your full and peripheral vision. Another example - you listen to a really funny comedian on TV and just laugh and laugh as you listen to lots and lots of jokes. Then when you turn off the TV, your conscious mind can remember none of them, or one or two at most. Then, a week later, a friend can just start to tell one of those jokes and you instantly remember the whole joke.
